Super Mario Bros., which was released on September 13, 1985 and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, sold approximately 40 million copies worldwide, sparking a huge boom as the best-selling game of all time at the time. Since then, Mario has evolved with each new console release, and the series has sold over 450 million copies in total. What is the story behind the birth of Mario, who ushered in the golden age of gaming and became one of the world's most famous icons? We conducted an extensive interview with his creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Consultant of Nintendo. We will thoroughly dissect the world of Mario from a design perspective, from the secrets of the pixel art design that was born out of the constraints of a mere 40 kilobytes of ROM capacity, to valuable development materials and the evolution of the character!
